Reporting a footpath problem
An interactive map of Somerset showing all the Rights of Ways (with their numbers) and current known faults, recent modifications and diversions is now available on the Council's website.
Probably the most important feature of this interactive map is that it can be used to report problems!!
See below to: REPORT PROBLEMS by letter or phone
To report FOOTPATH PROBLEMS such as:
Missing or broken stiles, bridges, gates, signposts or waymarks
Barbed wire, fences, rubbish or rubble
Undergrowth, hedgerow encroachment, overhanging branches or fallen trees
Ploughing or cropping
Misleading notices or dangerous animals
Select the correct addresses from the table below and address your letter to:

The Public Rights of Way Officer (unless another officer is indicated).

In your letter give as much detail as possible so that the exact position can be identified. Grid references are particularly useful but a photocopied map with a cross is just as good

Highway Authorities are responsible for ensuring that all paths are open and useable for the public. The Highway Authority in the South West is a County or Unitary Authority. The situation is complicated by the fact that some Highway Authorities (including Somerset) may devolve this responsibility to some or all of their areas.

Confusingly the Ramblers' Association Somerset area is made up of the five districts of the current county of Somerset plus the Unitary Authority of North Somerset, which has been divided into the two groups of Woodspring and Clevedon.

The most important reason for reporting path problems is, of course, to get them resolved! Few highway authorities have the resources to carry out and/or maintain their own surveys on the state of the path network so they rely on path users telling them when something has gone wrong. Path problem report also send an important message to authorities -- that members of the public what to be able to use the paths/. The more public interest that is shown in the state of paths the more likely the authority is to spend money on them
