NEWS

August Bank Holiday Weekend Walking Festival 2008.

An astonishing 290 people attended the Wookey festival of walks, beating the previous record attendance by over 100. The four walks on offer each day were enjoyed by all despite some squally showers. Equally enjoyable, were the tea and cakes provided after the walks. The events was well publicised and positive reports accompanied by group photos were published the local press.

Thank you to the authors of the walks booklet, work party, refreshment providers and all who contributed towards making the event such a success.

September Weekend 2008. The Abergavenny weekend went very well. We had favourable weather, even on Tuesday when the rain stopped just before the final walks commenced. Around 50 Ramblers enjoyed a total of nine walks, covering more than 66 miles and climbing more than ten thousand feet in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons. Your generous collection of £46 was donated to the Longtown Mountain Rescue Team and the Sunday car park donations went towards the upkeep of Llanddewi Skirrid Village Hall.

Somerset Area Holiday on the Isle of Wight. A total of 58 ramblers from six different groups enjoyed superb, sunny weather on the Isle of Wight in early October. Pebble strewn paths and woods featured on Friday's walks from Firestone Copse, while coastal views dominated Saturday's walks from Alum Bay. On Sunday the highlight was the panoramic whole island view from The Downs above Ventnor. On Monday we had a bit of everything on walks through Brading which returned along the coast to our hotel in Sandown.

Annual General Meeting. The AGM was held at The Britannia Inn, Wells on Saturday 1st November 2008. A record turnout of nearly 50 people attended. The minutes of the 2007 AGM were passed as correct. The officers presented their reports. (Available to read on the website.). It was noted that the Auditor will not be able to continue in 2009. Gus Halfhide stood down as Chairman after two years. Members at the AGM recorded their thanks to Gus for his inspired leadership and several individuals spoke movingly of their high regard for him. All other officers were willing to stand again and were elected unopposed. Mike Beveridge, Barbara Calverley, Doreen Marks and Gill Moxey were elected as Committee Members. No one was nominated for the post of Chairman, with the result that this role will rotate between the current Committee Members.

Doug Emery. Ramblers will be sad to learn that keen walker and work party volunteer, Doug Emery died in October. Our thoughts are with his wife Mary and family.

David Poole. Ramblers will be sad to learn that David Poole has died after a short illness. His laughter and humour were always well appreciated on walks. Our thoughts are with his wife Pauline and family.
